DUNAREA, DUNAV, DUNA, DUNAJ, DONAU GEHT
Audio installation at the inlet structure in Langenzersdor (A)
Audio piece: 19’ 12”
in German (A)

At the inlet structure in Langenzersdorf the New Danube branches off from the Danube. At high tide the weirs of the inlet structure open, so the water runs into the New Danube to prevent flooding. For pedestrians, cyclists and skaters the intake structure also provides a connection to the Danube Island (used for leisure) in Vienna.

I took advantage of this site to give people the opportunity to hear an audio piece. This leads the listener into the future, more precisely into the year 2089.

Ondine, the mermaid, returns as a narrator to us: while listening to her, we immerse in a collage of myths, legends and tales around the Danube, quotations from Jean Giraudouxs’ "Undine" and Ingeborg Bachmann's "Undine geht“. Moreover we learn about facts of the Danube and forecasts of water, the blue gold. The water resource is a good busines: In 2000 the turnover of its business was about 400 billion U.S. dollars, representing about 40% of the annual turnover in the oil business. It takes Ondine to awaken us from our lethargy. She complains about the passivity, with which we counteract human-induced changes in the nature.
